You can play a game about your job.

Instead, here’s Clairice.

They just picked up and went to Aspen. Didn’t have to tell anybody or pack much. Just, like, off to Aspen. See ya in the Summer.

I can’t figure out if this is profiling or just stupidity:

Qantas chairman Margaret Jackson was suspected of being a terrorist and frisked during a visit to the US last year. The airport security guard who checked her was reluctant to believe that a woman could be the head of an airline.

They didn’t stop her for failing to have a “u” after the “q” in the company name? Can’t use proper nouns for Scrabble anyway, so it’s probably not a Guantanamo-level offense.

Red Mars

My book picks are usually something boring, like management or some technical topic. When I read for enjoyment, it’s usually hard sci-fi. The Dune series, for instance, although the books that Frank’s son wrote are terrible.

I got a copy of ‘Red Mars’ for xmas, the first book in a trilogy about terraforming Mars. The First Hundred, as the colonists are called, are an international collection of scientists and engineers. If there’s one thing I learned, it’s that if somebody comes knocking on my door asking if I want to spend the rest of my life on another planet with 100 jackasses, I should decline.

Not that the book isn’t excellent - it is. My problem is I’m constantly distracted by the petty disputes between characters and lose track of what’s going on.

This is the second book by Kim Stanley Robinson I’ve read. The first, ‘The Years of Rice and Salt,’ was also quite good, presenting an alternative world history that would make Indians, Muslims and Chinese happy. Western Europe is completely wiped out by the Black Death in the 14th century, leaving the world to be conquered by the Muslims and Chinese, and eventually the Indians and what we refer to as the American Indians. The reader experiences the timeline through a group of people reincarnated together. An interesting book.

I had a point when I started this blog entry. Really, I did.

No urinal mint?

Appreciation of art aside, this thing looks like a urninal. I’m not buying the “performance art” bit. Maybe the attacker was frustrated at the lack of urinals in the men’s lavatory.

Sometimes, when one of the cats is sleeping and the other is annoying me, I’ll pick up the annoying one and start tapping the sleeping cat’s head with the annoying cat’s paw. After a few minutes, the sleeping cat starts wrestling with the annoying cat. They usually fight long enough for me to get some work done. If I’m really lucky, they’ll both take a nap.

Now you might think that’s cruel, but you forget something. I own them.

Congrats to the Child’s Play charity for raising $590,000 for children’s hospitals. The money doesn’t go to traditional medicine, however. It goes to buy consoles and games for sick kids in hospitals. And that’s pretty cool.

After quite a bit of deliberation, I’ve decided not to take the job in SF. The chances of me easily slipping into a subordinate role are pretty slim, and I’d rather not drag my stuff across the country to find out for sure. Besides, it’d be a 50% pay cut.

In other news, the leak has finally been fixed. I’ll need to get a wall fixed, but I fared better than the twits that live above me. Drywall replacement couldn’t happen to nicer people. Rather than rush out and find a contractor, I’m going to wait until the flood of projects I’m working on slows down.

Of course, we spent NYE shaking our money makers at Kuma’s. A good time was had by all, and, as far as I can tell, nobody got deathly sick.

It’s nice to know that, even on NYE, I get spam.
